A landmark legislation

  • A landmark celebration

Title IX has been instrumental in shaping a more equitable environment at Illinois State University. The University's commitment to upholding the principles of Title IX has led to significant progress in gender equality across athletics, academics, and campus life, creating a more inclusive and supportive community for all students.

In 2022, Illinois State University celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX which included the building of a Title IX Landmark between Horton Field House and CEFCU Arena. This landmark includes the 37 words that amended the Higher Education Act and became Title IX.

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

These 37 words made a difference for many and will continue to shape the future. This landmark helped to make Illinois State University’s history visible to those who walk by it daily and chart the future path, as well as to those who have advocated for Title IX.
