  • Ringing the bell through the years

The Old Main Bell is a significant historical artifact at Illinois State University, representing the institution's long and celebrated past. After its creation in 1860, the bell was originally housed in the Old Main building, the first major building on the Illinois State Normal University (now Illinois State University) campus.

In 1880 the bell cracked and the sound was missed dearly, making way for a new bell to be hung in the tower by 1882.

Old Main was constructed in the mid-19th century and served as the central building for the University, housing classrooms, offices, and other essential facilities. The building was demolished in 1958 due to structural issues and changing campus needs. However, the bell was preserved as a cherished relic of the University's early days and is displayed on the Quad.
  • Redbirds Ring

The Old Main Bell was traditionally used to signal the start and end of classes, special events, and other important occasions. Today, a replica of the Old Main Bell is rung during The Founding Week, recognizing each year the University is celebrating.
